Student Opportunities

The New Hampshire GEAR UP Alliance offers great opportunities for our students. These include help with school, college and career advising, scholarships, and leadership opportunities. As a GEAR UP student, you’ll also find resources to help navigate your post-school options.

A key feature of GEAR UP is that students don’t need to apply to participate. All students at our GEAR UP New Hampshire and GEAR UP Manchester schools are part of our cohort. GEAR UP coordinators and school counselors are available to help you access programs.

Academic Development

GEAR UP offers many programs designed to build academic skills. Programs include GEAR UP for Success, the GEAR UP Summer Reading Program, tutoring, academic competitions, and more. We also partner with training programs like Yale Young Global Scholars, iTutor, and Paradigm Shift for training that meets your needs.

Programs are designed to help students of any academic standing achieve their education goals. You can talk with your GEAR UP coordinator or school counselor to learn what programs will best help you.

If I could make one change to the summer program, I wouldn’t because every day is awesome!

Leadership Development

In addition to providing leadership training through our skill development programs, we offer leadership opportunities within our own structure. Current opportunities for GEAR UP students include the GEAR UP Manchester Student Leadership Board and the GEAR UP New Hampshire Student Advisory Board.

GEAR UP offers a variety of additional leadership opportunities throughout the year. Reach out to your GEAR UP coordinator or school counselor to find out how to get involved.

College and Career Preparation

The New Hampshire GEAR UP Alliance is all about helping students prepare for life after school. We offer training, information, and resources to guide you in navigating the choices available to you.

In addition to academic skill building, we help our students prepare for college and careers by:

    • Navigating education, employment, and military service options.
    • Planning for four-year university, community college, or technical school.
    • Applying to and paying for college.
    • Honing workforce and job application skills.
    • Understanding ROTC and military recruitment.

As part of preparing students for college, the New Hampshire GEAR UP Alliance works to help students access college funding. We offer resources and advice for tapping into financial aid, including loans, scholarships, and other funding opportunities. We also provide direct scholarships for GEAR UP New Hampshire students who remain in state for college.

Through an exciting partnership, Plymouth State University is making additional “On the Move” scholarships available to our students. All students participating in GEAR UP Manchester or GEAR UP New Hampshire academic programs are eligible. If you apply to and enroll in Plymouth State in 2022–2025, you can receive a scholarship of $2,000/year. That’s $8,000 over four years of college.
